Text Box: L.A., the fiery Aries percussionist, was born and raised in New York City She describes herself as a “teacher, musical therapist, performing artist, percussionist and musical director of bands” Currently, she heads Simply Skins, the “Daughters of the Drum”. Widely known as a “phenomenal female drumming ensemble [that] embraces the power of women in unity to heal Text Box: POET AND STORYTELLER Text Box: and create value”, Simply Skins was formed in 1996 but has undergone a few personnel changes. The current members are Sharyn Brown, Ife Velma George, Reinette Lara, Take Philips, Lindsey Wilson, and male dancer Christopher Wyndom. Motivated by Simply Skins’ success and talent, L.A.’s students formed three separate groups - Season Women, Sista N Sync, and Heartbeats in Harmony. “Females want to learn how to play the drums. The drum is a very therapeutic instrument”. At the age of eleven, L. A. was inspired by a Hispanic family that lived and played drums out on the street in her neighborhood. That was the beginning of her life long passion for the art. “I used to be mesmerized by them. I would just listen for hours and hours.” Today she views the drum as a connection between all of us that transcends race and age. “We’re all connected through the heart. No matter what - the drums connects that. I want the women who are under my teaching to be connected with themselves. She hopes that drumming will “bring out the rhythm of their lives, their causes and their missions.” Among some of the instruments that L.A. plays are the Timbale, Djembe, and the Conga. Her recorded work continued
